Number Talks: Shifting the Culture of the Mathematics Classroom
The most recent PISA (2015, Programme for International Student Assessment) results continue to confirm that the lowest achievers in mathematics are those who memorize procedures. In contrast, the highest achievers focus on looking for and making mathematical relationships to solve problems. How can we shift our mathematics teaching practice to provide access and numerical fluency for all students?
In this two-day institute, we will investigate the implementation of Number Talks (a five-to-fifteen-minute classroom conversation around purposefully crafted computation problems that are solved mentally) as a change agent for shifting our beliefs and practices about teaching and learning mathematics through memorization to building student understanding and fluency using mathematical relationships.
Participants will take part in whole number and fraction Number Talks, rehearse planning and facilitating small group Number Talks, and develop a framework for implementation.
Target Audience: Grades 2-8, Mathematics Coaches.
Continuum Levels: 2, 3
