STUDY: National Board Certification Correlates to Higher Test Scores

"According to research by the University of Washington and the Urban Institute, North Carolina teachers who received national certification were more effective at raising student achievement than teachers who tried but failed to attain the credential. The research showed that national certification was linked to an average gain of seven percent in third- through fifth-graders' reading and math scores." STUDY: Students Taught by NB certified teachers earn higher SAT-9 scores

A new Arizona State University study reveals that students taught by National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs), in 14 Arizona school districts, outperformed their schoolmates on the nationwide Stanford Achievement Test (SAT-9). Drawing on four years of SAT-9 data (in reading, mathematics and language arts), students in grades three through six of NBCTs surpassed students of non-Board certified teachers in nearly three-quarters of the measurements.

The study, "National Board Certified Teachers and Their Students' Achievement," also found that the student achievement gains went beyond test scores, adding up to learning improvements equivalent to more than a month's worth of additional time in the classroom. The report was authored by Leslie Vandevoort, Audrey Amrein-Beardsley, and David Berliner and was published September 8, 2004, in Education Policy Analysis Archives, http://epaa.asu.edu/epaa/v12n46/, an international peer-reviewed online journal.
