The 2016-2017 school year has begun. For some of you, it is ‘welcome back to NESA’; and for others, it’s ‘welcome to NESA’. To those of you who are new to your school and new to NESA, especially warm wishes for a great start of this chapter of your professional lives. You’re in an exciting and energizing region.
We—the NESA Board of Trustees, the Professional Development Advisory Committee, the various Collaboratives and the staff in the NESA Center here in Athens—have some very exciting, some very high-quality professional learning opportunities planned for you. In these pages, you can read about what’s in store. . .or you can also go to the NESA website www.nesacenter.org for the latest updates. We urge you to check the website regularly to stay up-to-date on what is on offer.
And peruse this issue for news from our schools, some articles and other highlights from around the region.
As the year begins, I’d like to share some some favorite lyrics from Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods to reflect on:
Careful the things you say,
Children will listen.
Careful the things you do,
Children will see.
Children may not obey,
But children will listen.
Children will look to you
For which way to turn,
To learn what to be. (Emphasis added)
And another quotation, this one from Marian Wright Edelman, as you dedicate yourselves to this new year: “Use me as Thou wilt to save Thy Children today and tomorrow, and to build a nation and a world where no child is left behind, and every child is loved and every child is safe.”
Here’s to a great year of learning, collaboration and growth for all of us.
For the NESA Staff,
