In response to requests from our member schools, last year NESA offered special introductory training in “Habits of Mind”, particularly as they relate to preparing our students to succeed and contribute in a rapidly changing 21st century world. Graham Watts, Affiliate Director of The Institute for Habits of Mind, facilitated a two-part Foundational Course at NESA's 2011 Fall Training Institute (part 1) and 2012 Winter Training Institute (part 2).
This year, we are pleased to announce that NESA, by a special arrangement with the Institute for Habits of Mind — and again facilitated by Graham Watts — will offer a special two-day strand for advanced training in “Habits of Mind” at the 2013 Spring Educators Conference in Bangkok.
“Habits of Mind” is a program of great repute, based on the work of Dr Art Costa and Dr Bena Kallick. It focuses on many of those skills which are now deemed “21stCentury Skills”. . .but which have long been an essential part of a well-rounded, empowering education.
This course is designed to equip participants with the coaching skills and attributes needed to serve as mentors to colleagues and as resource persons in schools that are dedicated to a professional and academic culture that prizes the “Habits of Mind”.
This training is accredited by The Institute for Habits of Mind. Participants will receive a certificate of completion from the Institute.
Dates (NOTE DATE CHANGE!!):
- Friday, April 5, 10:30-3:30 [lunch 12:30-1:30] —Part 1 of 2 (4 hours)
- Saturday, April 6, 8:30-1:00 [coffee break 10:30-11:00] —Part 2 of 2 (4 hours)

The "Mindful Mentors" professional learning course is for educators who are already familiar with the 16 "Habits of Mind", are using them in their own class or across their school and who want to develop capacity to lead, embed and sustain the habits across all aspects of learning and living in their school.
The aims are:
- to prepare participants for integrating and embedding Habits of Mind in a school
- to develop strategies to sustain Habits of Mind over the long term
- to coach colleagues in their development of the Habits in professional practice
- to consider how to overcome obstacles and blockers when developing Habits of Mind across the school
There is no additional cost for participation in these workshops beyond the normal individual registration fee for the Spring Educators Conference.
