AERO's Erma Anderson will lead three summer cohorts — for Elementary, Middle School and High School NESA Math Teachers — focused on developing an instructional plan for mathematics for the next academic year. Using Mathematics Critical Areas to Address Unfinished Learnings & Deepen Student Mathematical Understanding
As the academic year ends, schools are developing different scenarios for reopening. Part of the planning is bracing for what months of patchwork instruction will mean when students return in the fall. While planning for the diverse needs of students is not new, the complexity and uncertainty of the current educational landscape requires action. Develop an intentional plan now, and make a world of difference to student mathematical learning for the next school year and beyond.
In these online sessions, we will focus on the question: What strategies support using the “math critical areas” to fill learning gaps and deepen student mathematical understanding?
Focusing on critical areas does not mean deemphasizing some standards. To deemphasize standards that seem beyond these critical areas abandons parts of the curriculum that are essential for deep conceptual learning. Each standard is not a new event, but an extension of previous learning. Mathematics is not a list of disconnected topics, tricks, or mnemonics; it is a coherent body of knowledge made up of interconnected concepts.
The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) Critical Areas for each grade level brings focus and coherence to the curriculum and guides instruction of ALL standards. This session will focus on using these critical areas to address learning gaps and deepen mathematical understanding of foundational learnings.
- Examine the critical areas and major clusters across grade levels to discover both the connection and progression of related standards.
- Explore how a focus on the critical areas allows depth in learning, which is carried out through the Standards for Mathematical Practice.
- Identify resources to assist with assessing student progression toward mastery within the Critical Areas of Focus.

ABOUT ERMA ANDERSON
Erma Anderson is a former high school physics and mathematics teacher and Albert Einstein Distinguished Fellow in the US Senate. She was a Senior Program Officer with the National Research Council assisting in the development of the National Science Education Standards and a Christa McAuliffe Fellow with the National Foundation for the Improvement of Education.
She has worked with the National Science Teachers Association on several projects including the Mentoring Initiative e-Mentoring for Student Success (eMSS), development of sciLINKS (www.sciLINKS.org), and Project Manager of Scope, Sequence and Coordination of Secondary School Science.
