Cultivating Learner Agency Through Sustained Inquiry
Deep and transferable learning occurs best when students feel inspired and empowered to learn. Properly understood learner agency involves two key dimensions: inspiring the will to learn, and building the capacity for learning.
During this workshop, participants will explore keys for cultivating learner agency including:
- the design of rich and meaningful tasks;
- employing a cascading curriculum design that carefully sequences a set of related inquiries; and
- building students’ background knowledge through critically thoughtful approaches.
Participants will be introduced to several practical and immediately useable ideas that have applications across grades and subjects.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Consider the key attributes of rich tasks that have the power to inspire learning.
- Explore the efficacy of sequencing a set of related inquiries to promote sustained inquiry.
- Consider the effectiveness of a variety of thinking strategies that promote critical, creative and collaborative thinking.

Re-thinking the Instruction-Assessment Relationship
Despite over two decades of work to improve assessment by distinguishing assessment as, for and of learning, too often assessment remains periodic judgements of student work. To fully realize the power of assessment, a re-thinking of its integral relationship is necessary.
Rather than assessment and instruction running like parallel tracks, truly transformative learning occurs when assessment and instruction form a double-helix of learning.
In this session, participants will consider a how the use of Learning Launches, Thoughtbooks, and Guides to Success and Thinking organizers can help to create a seamless web of learning where assessment and instruction work in unison.
This highly practical workshop will provide participants with several useful resources and a fresh and dynamic way to create an interplay between assessment and instruction.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Develop an understanding of the concept of a double-helix of learning.
- Consider how reflective and iterative learning can create a seamless interplay between assessment and instruction.
- Develop approaches that support assessment as guidance and help to promote student agency and well-being.
- Explore tactics and strategies that shift classroom focus from seeking correct answers to the development of sound answers.
