The Joyful Classroom: Teaching with the Heart in Mind
Presenter: JOY MARCHESE
While there is a great focus in our society on academic achievement, science shows that understanding the cognitive aspects of our mind (how we learn), while teaching heart skills such as empathy and kindness (the qualities that make us human), helps children be successful in school and later in life.
During this session, we will examine the role of emotions in teaching and learning. Through experiential activities we will discover how we can help children develop their hearts — understand the way they ‘feel' and how they relate to others.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Participants will…
- Experience brain-friendly classroom strategies;
- Discover conditions where children feel connected with others and have the opportunity to practice social and emotional skills;
- Understand how to support your students through teaching self-regulation strategies and emotional literacy.

The Brain Friendly Classroom: Common Sense Explained by Science
Presenters: JOY MARCHESE & VEERLE PONNET
Learning may be complicated, but learning about learning doesn't have to be! The brain is the most complex part of our human body, and even though it is the most important organ in our body, we don’t usually know very much about it. Understanding what happens in the brain as we learn will help us to teach more effectively.
During this session, we will discover and engage in practical strategies to integrate social emotional learning (SEL) and Educational Neuroscience in the classroom, unlocking the ‘black box’ of students' minds and boosting learning potential.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Participants will…
- Experience classroom strategies that reflect what we know about the brain and learning.
- Discover ways to engage your students and make learning stick.
- Feel supported and encouraged to bring your learning back into your classroom.

The Inner Work Required for an Inclusive School Culture
Presenter: JOY MARCHESE
Some of our earliest attachments were made with teachers in the classroom. These relationships were essential not only to how we felt about learning, but also to how to we felt about ourselves. Our classroom experiences helped to develop our belief systems and shaped the human beings we have become.
If we were lucky enough to have a good teacher, we may have described them like this:
“She was compassionate.”
“He understood me.”
“She really listened.”
“He wasn’t just a teacher, he was someone I looked up to.”
These descriptions are not just based on a teacher’s personality traits. These are skills, and more specifically, adult social and emotional competencies that lead to a more open and inclusive experience.
During this session, we will take a deep personal dive into the adult SEL competencies that equip educators to be compassionate, just and inclusive.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Recognize our areas of strength and areas of growth in the classroom and what they invite from our students (and colleagues);
- Strengthen awareness of such competencies as self and social awareness;
- Develop our language to build empathy and connect deeply with our students.
