Three Truths for the Future of Learning
We are living through an inflection point. A wake-up call. A call that has the potential to bring about a fundamental re-ordering and re-building of the entire education system.
This session offers a framework or a lens to actively design and build the type of education system our children – and our world – need and deserve.
CONNECT & ENGAGE
What will it take for our system of education – our habits, our assumptions, and our generally accepted practices – to shift in ways that we know are needed?
All children should have free access to an education system that prepares them for an unknowable future, is grounded in the latest research on how human beings learn, grow and thrive, and that actively seeks to build equitable futures. We will conduct a self-assessment to see where our current beliefs and practices lie in relation to the 3 Truths Framework.
LEARN
What do we know about how to teach for an unknowable future, about the science of learning and development, and about how to build equitable structures for all learners?
We will explore evidence-based practices that shine a spotlight on ways in which our current system ignores these fundamental truths about what a modern-day education should look like.
REFLECT & APPLY
The required shifts will only happen when enough individuals start to adopt new practices. We will spend time thinking about our current context and make a vision and action plan for our next steps toward implementing the 3 Truths Framework. We will leave feeling energized and excited about possibilities, and ready to build the future of school in our own setting.

Learning That Transfers: Designing Curriculum for a Changing World
Synthesizing the best available research on how we learn, educators can design units and lesson plans that prepare our students to meet the challenges of an uncertain future. Join Julie Stern for this cutting-edge workshop that will demonstrate a systematic way to empower students to apply their learning to new situations.
CONNECT & ENGAGE
Do your students ever ask: Why are we learning this stuff, and why should we care? Students asking this question are mired down in the details of the discipline, without grasping the overall structure and how this structure helps us to navigate our world.
When we are clear about the ways in which the world is organized, students see how their learning helps them to unlock future situations. We will boost our understanding of conceptual learning and ponder how it facilitates transfer to new situations.
LEARN
Participants will learn to:
|
REFLECT & APPLY
We will explore examples that are closely aligned to each participant's context and leave with concrete classroom strategies to promote surface, deep, and transfer learning.
