Bringing Unity to the NESA-PE Community
If you have asked these questions or many others about physical education, this is the institute for you. It is ideal for physical educators, new and seasoned, PE Heads, and administrators eager to unite the field of physical education to provide ALL students with a dynamic, relevant, and meaningful experience.
These two days will be designed to bring physical educators together into a Professional Learning Community. In this process, best practices, innovative approaches, and contemporary strategies will be presented through active engagement in physical education experiences all with an eye to disrupting traditional physical education norms and transforming physical education in NESA schools.
CONNECT & ENGAGE
Connection is essential to learning. Whether it is students connecting with themselves, each other, content, or the teacher, “No significant learning can occur without a significant relationship” (Comer, 1995). This institute will foster connection and engagement by first allowing attendees to connect with each other for two days and beyond.
In addition, innovative strategies for nurturing student connections and engagement in physical education experiences will be modeled throughout the institute. By bringing research to practice, attendees will leave with novel approaches to creating a learning environment that promotes connection and engagement in physical education.
LEARN
Through interactive engagement in physical education experiences, reflection, and discussion, participants will learn innovative and disruptive pedagogies. Strategies for creating safe, efficient learning environments to empower students, methods, such as concept-based instruction, for designing experiences that are meaningful and relevant to students, and practices like project-based learning, to guide students on a journey that makes physical activity an important part of their lives will be presented.
Finally, approaches to examine student learning and evaluate physical education offerings via student-centered assessments will be integrated in a variety of settings.
REFLECT & APPLY
Attendees will engage in learning experiences designed to challenge their thinking on traditional physical education. Prompts designed to foster personal and global reflection will be integrated throughout the institute.
Participants will also be challenged to reflect on their learning and develop a plan to apply their learning upon returning to their schools. This process will be aided by creating a Professional Learning Community for NESA-PE. The PLC will work to maintain the momentum created during the institute and sustain PE teacher efforts beyond.
OUTCOMES
Participants will...:
- list at least three practices they can integrate into their own physical education classes within one week of the institute;
