Improving Student Engagement through Student-Relevant SEL

At the present moment, most international schools have a clear understanding of why SEL is so important for student learning and wellbeing. The challenges arise when it comes to the actual practice of teaching and embedding SEL. There are several impediments that international schools are currently facing, including culturally and generationally irrelevant material and approaches.

In this workshop, we will explore Sea Change's Core Model for Student Engagement, as well as tools to ensure schools are designing relevant learning experiences in our diverse communities.

CONNECT & ENGAGE

Participants will connect with one another and share the successes and challenges of their SEL efforts as it relates to student engagement. They will also hear the insights of real students' experiences of both engaging and disconnected SEL in their schools.

LEARN

Participants will learn about what the research tells us about student engagement in SEL and how to make SEL more relevant to students' developmental, generational and cultural backgrounds.

Participants will also learn about Sea Change's Core Model for Student Engagement, including the elements of play, collaboration, discussion, planning, and studying within the SEL context.

REFLECT & APPLY

Participants will adapt a current practice using what we learned together. Through feedback and collaboration, participants will leave with clear next steps to deepen student engagement in SEL.
