Possibilities and Parameters: Shifting Educator Practice in the Era of AI
Generative AI has made a significant impact on the field of learning, and its influence is only growing. As we embrace the possibilities AI can offer to our design of learning experiences and to our educator practice, we must also equip ourselves to use it well and with intention.
Through this interactive, hands-on session, participants will deepen their understanding of AI’s capabilities and constraints in order to extend their pedagogical practice in the era of AI. This session is designed to offer a scaffolded and differentiated experience for all educators, from those who are new to AI to those who are looking for more concrete ways to further develop their practice.
CONNECT & ENGAGE
We will begin with a reflection of feelings and participants' current stance on AI through a Mentimeter and turn-and-talk. We will discuss briefly how our emotional response can influence our practice and why we need to be mindful of it as we engage in this work.
Following this, we will lower the stakes by taking the opportunity to play with AI as this is an important entry point for engagement to develop our own curiosity and confidence in navigating the newness of AI.
LEARN
We will engage in a framework that takes us from considering how AI can impact our educator practice through pedagogical lenses. From increasing the efficiency we can bring to our workflow to designing assessment practices that provide more scaffolds for learners, there is great opportunity in intentionally incorporating AI. We will also reference and pay careful attention to our own responsible use given the risk of bias, inaccuracy, and misuse of data.
REFLECT & APPLY
Participants will engage in design time to immediately apply some of what they learned with the opportunity to ask questions and share in the process with others.
A show and share of good questions and ideas will conclude the session. All participants will leave with a copy of resources and a playlist for ongoing practice.
OUTCOMES
Participants will...
- develop greater clarity on the current landscape of generative AI and its impact on teaching and learning.
- take away a framework for engaging with AI, aligned to their needs and current skillset.
- practice enhancing pedagogical practices with new tools and strategies.
