Impactful Instructional Designs in Arabic Classes: A Deep Dive into the Elements of Effective Lesson Planning
This three-day institute invites Arabic teachers to take a deep dive into the elements of lesson planning and instructional designs that impact the learning of the language.
The institute is offered in collaboration with The Arabic Institute of Excellence at the American Community School of Abu Dhabi and provides an opportunity for engaging in class observation and lesson study on Day 1, with Arabic K-12 training on Days 2 and 3.
Note: A laptop is required for these sessions.
CONNECT & ENGAGE
Whether teaching Arabic for speakers of the language, heritage learners, or non-speakers of the language, the following elements are necessary for any instructional design to ensure impactful learning of the Arabic language: language input and output, guided and independent practices, and formative feedback.
In this institute, we will unpack these elements and study their impact on language acquisition. Together, we will design lesson plans using these necessary elements. Throughout the three days, we will develop learning experiences for the multiple profiles of learners in the Arabic class. We will study, analyze, and assess the impact of those experiences on increasing students’ proficiency.
On the first day of the Institute, participants will take part in classroom observations hosted by Arabic teachers at ACS Abu Dhabi. In collaborative teams, participants will engage in a guided lesson study. They will observe, inquire, learn, and provide feedback. The goal is to learn together, and observe the theory in action.
LEARN
Together, we will learn:
- How to design impactful lesson plans;
- How to design learning experiences that lead to increased proficiency;
- How to reflect on practices and assess their effectiveness;
- How to provide formative feedback and use it to inform instruction.
REFLECT & APPLY
In small collaborative teams, participants will design lesson plans that increase the learner’s proficiency. They will leave with impactful instructional designs ready to be implemented. The process will involve studying current practices and reflecting on their impact.
OUTCOMES
Participants will...
- Understand the elements of effective instructional designs;
- Set learning targets and designing lessons to achieve them;
- Design learning experiences that increase the learners’ proficiency;
- Assess and reflecting on the designed experiences to increase impact.
