Institute Description

Sketchnoting in the Classroom

Sketchnoting or “Visual note-taking” is gaining widespread popularity as an effective and engaging way for students to take notes and to display their understanding and learning. The technique allows one to draw or doodle thoughts, observations, or notes in combination with words or text.

Sketchnoting offers many benefits since studies have proven that images can dramatically enhance memory retention, comprehension and motivation. There are psychological benefits as well because sketchnoting has a calming effect similar to meditation and listening to soothing music. Finally, students are more engaged in class because notetaking becomes more meaningful and fun when doodles are added to text.

This workshop will help you get over the “But I’m not an artist” mentality because you do not have to be an artist to sketchnote! You will learn how to establish a doodling culture in class with various fun and scaffolded drawing activities.

You will also learn about the elements of sketchnoting such as how to set up your sketchnote and how to draw icons, fonts, arrows, people, faces, animals, banners, containers, frames, bullets, dividers, and shading. By the end of the workshop, you will be able to take visual notes during class, meetings and conferences and will have the tools necessary to teach your students how to become effective sketchnoters.

Target Audience: All educators, Grades K-12.
