We will have the opportunity to glean greater insight into what our students’ transitions to the “real world” are like; what skills they use to adapt; what challenges they face; and how schools do and do not prepare them for this chapter. Through storytelling, observing first hand accounts of student experiences, and reflection exercises, we will connect with our students’ experiences and with each other to consider the implications for our work.

Learn

Sea Change Mentoring's research on cross-cultural transitions support in 88 international schools highlights several gaps in care and the reasons behind those gaps. We explore this latest research as well as discuss the latest research findings on this topic such as Cardiff University, IEPS and ISC's "Wellbeing in International Schools Survey" and The Drum Cussac “Future of Risk” white paper.

Reflect & Apply

Attendees will reflect and share with colleagues what they are doing to support students and suggestions for further work. We invite Michael Nachbar of Global Online Academy and Jamie Steckart from Think Global School to discuss the ways they provide this kind of support, their perspective, and insight from the field. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore potential models they can adopt in their schools and set goals for how they would like to improve their support of globally mobile students.

Choosing the Path Forward: Adapting your school to meet the social emotional learning needs of your students

Connect & Engage

Learn about the common challenges and opportunities within the realm of social emotional learning that Ellen Mahoney has seen in her work with international schools around the world, as they strive to find the common language, research-backed frameworks, and effective implementation strategies that work best for their school communities. Attendees will share with each other what has worked for their schools, what stage in the process they are in, how they adapt social and emotional learning approaches to the culture of their school and the wider community, and some of the hurdles in their way.

We will look at what research tells us about successful SEL implementation, including effective professional development, assessment, tailoring approaches across school divisions, and requirements for school leadership. Ms Mahoney will share helpful frameworks and self-assessments that will guide school leaders in understanding when they are ready to implement SEL programming and what may need strengthening in order for them to achieve greater success.

Reflect & Apply

Leaders will have the opportunity to reflect on where they are in their SEL journey and to use some of the tools discussed earlier in the day to gain greater insight into their own work. You will work with each other to create roadmaps to your desired SEL destinations, and you will support each other in arriving at solutions to any challenges you may be facing in this work.
