3-Day Certificate Course: March 29-31
Integrating Service Learning in the Curriculum
Day 1: Approaches to Curricular Design
CATHRYN BERGER KAYE
This workshop will explore approaches to the curricular design process through three frameworks:
Framework One: Across the Curriculum
Accentuate the learning! Educators work in collaboration with others to explore cross curricular connections made through a service learning lens. Central themes emerge from curricular topics, with elements of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Framework Two: The Five Stages
Conceptualize and design a unit of study infusing knowledge, skills and dispositions within the stage that is most appropriate: investigation, preparation, action, reflection, and demonstration.
Framework Three: Unifying the Curriculum
Identify themes and essential concepts that link units to create a coherent yearlong curriculum; a dynamic way to advance our understanding and elevate our practice of Service Learning.
Participants will explore and experience these models in a lively interactive session, and develop a plan or unit of study. Most importantly, the process is made transparent so these approaches can be applied within your school to strengthen Service Learning integration.
Day 2: Meaningful Service Learning
TARA BARTON
Aim:
The aim of this workshop is to develop participants’ understanding of meaningful service learning through integration into the current curriculum. “What is Service Learning?” through the five stages of Service Learning will be actively explored and understood.
Standards and Benchmarks that are adaptable into any curriculum framework will be shared with Serve Learn Curriculum Continuum exemplars, and other examples from various international schools such as AISJ who are currently integrating the Service Learning Standards and Benchmarks into Rubicon Atlas units. Formative and summative assessments are explored through various examples with Rubrics of Understanding.
Learning Outcomes:
- Make meaning of prior knowledge of Service Learning to develop an understanding of research based best practice by applying the Service Learning Standards and Benchmarks into the current curriculum.
- An understanding of assessment and how to link assessments in Service Learning units to subject-specific assessment criteria.
- Knowledge of specific Service Learning courses (Global Citizens/Issues and Social Entrepreneurship) for international schools for Service Learning integration.
Day 3:
Facilitated planning for application - supported by Cathy, Tara and members of the Service Learning Collaborative Core.
Target Audience: K-12 teachers
