An Integrated Model for Social Studies: AERO Framework, Practices, and C3 Inquiry

Connect & Engage

Participants will experience an inquiry-based social studies experience which they can take back and apply immediately in their own classrooms to kick start their use of the social studies practices

Learn

Participants will gain an understanding of the updates to the AERO social studies standards as well as the impact of the social studies practices on the teaching and learning in their classrooms. They will also experience a review of the inquiry process as illustrated by the C3 Framework. They will develop strategies to put it all together by combining the AERO standards, practices, and inquiry to enrich and expand the curriculum.

Reflect & Apply

Participants will be given time to look at their units in order to embed inquiry experiences into their students' learning. They will consider the best ways to assess that learning. They will also reflect on the roles that teachers and students play when developing significant questions in the study of social studies, and what an inquiry-based classroom looks like.

Outcomes

Participants will:

• gain an understanding of how the AERO Social Studies Standards have been updated to include the social studies practices;
• gain an understanding of how the AERO Social Studies Standards and dimensions of C3 complement each other;
• will work with their own units to embed the inquiry process into the student learning plans.
