STEVEN LEINWAND is a Principal Research Analyst at the American Institutes for Research in Washington, DC, who has over 40 years of mathematics education leadership in the areas of curriculum development, instructional quality, assessment, professional development and school improvement.
Mr Leinwand taught mathematics in the 1970s and was Director of Mathematics in the Connecticut State Department of Education in the 1980s and 1990s. In addition, he has been President of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics and served on the Board of Directors of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
He was chair of the writing committee for NCTM's Principles to Actions and has written numerous articles and textbooks.
In addition, Mr Leinwand is the author of Sensible Mathematics, Accessible Mathematics, and Developing Numerical Fluency (all Heinemann).
Effective Differentiation of Both Ends of the Spectrum in Gr. 6-12 Mathematics
(In coordination with NESA's Math Collaborative)All of us as teachers hear the clarion call to "differentiate, differentiate, differentiate." We know we need to do a better job of meeting the diverse needs of the students in our classes, but most of us have been provided with minimal guidance of how to do such differentiation.
Accordingly, this fast-paced, example-laden two-day session will focus on practical strategies for balancing the needs of both the struggling students and the high flyers who arrive in our middle and high school mathematics classrooms.
We'll look at the power of alternative approaches and multiple representations as tools to deal with the realities of students who process mathematics in different ways and picture mathematics is equally different ways.
We'll look at a 2 + 1 strategy whereby all students are expected to complete the two core tasks, while our faster students get to go deeper with the one additional task. Come prepared to be informed, stimulated and challenged.
