Supporting Student Learning with High Quality Assessment Practices
Connect & Engage
Participants will work in disciplinary teams discussing ways to lead others in designing and implementing high quality standards-based classroom assessments and research-based formative assessment strategies.
Four assessment methods (selected response, written response, performance assessment task, and personal communication) and seven formative assessment strategies (clear learning targets, models of student work at different performance levels, descriptive feedback, self-assessment and goal setting, addressing misconceptions, instruction aligned with student needs, and students tracking, reflecting, and communicating his/her learning) aligned with content standards and grade level outcomes will be highlighted.
Learn
Participants will work in disciplinary teams enhancing their assessment design knowledge and confidence in leading others in designing and critiquing others in designing and critiquing classroom assessment. A collection of assessment design checklists and protocols will be used to support participant learning.
Participants are encouraged to bring existing or draft classroom assessments and content standards to use for refining and critiquing assessment measures. Additionally, participants will develop tools to support intentional implementation of research-based formative assessment strategies aligned with assessments to be used during a unit of study.
Reflect & Apply
Emphasis will be placed on ensuring participants have a collection of tools and resources to support self and others in the implementation of high-quality assessment design and formative assessment strategies. Participants will annotate and modify resources provided during the training to contextualize to school setting, students, and content area(s). Disciplinary teams will also create a shared web-based space to be used for collaboration during and after the training to support the sharing of materials, assessments, and tools across the NESA region.
