"Poetry is beyond mere words. Poetry is action.” (Reyes, 2006).
In addition to being engaging and fun, spoken word poetry serves several important curricular needs. Spoken Word serves a culturally sustaining pedagogy, Freire’s dialogical process, and hooks’ education as the practice of freedom. As such, we can create a more just world through spoken word poetry.
Additionally, Spoken Word enriches several key academic literacy skills and inspires student agency, voice and commitment to social action.
In this workshop, we will play with poetry and investigate all of the unique pedagogical tools it serves. Poetry is not an extra. Poetry is essential to our human condition. Ready to share your voice and inspire our students?!
