NESA Member & Affiliate School Status

NESA Member and Affiliate School status is for schools committed to professional learning and sustained, systemic school improvement. Joining NESA means becoming part of a collaborative community where relationships support educator personal and professional growth and holistic student development.

Who Can Apply?

To be considered for NESA membership, a school must:

Be a private, independent elementary or secondary American/international overseas school (or school system)
Use English as the primary language of instruction
Wish to engage in NESA’s programs and learning community
Support NESA’s mission, vision, and core values

Beyond these shared eligibility requirements, additional criteria determine whether a school should apply for full Member School or Affiliate School status, as follows:

Member School Requirements

To be considered for Member School status, a school must:

Be accredited by a NESA-recognized agency: CIS, MSA, NEASC or WASC
Offer a comprehensive, standards-based US-type curriculum

Member School applications are reviewed and approved by the NESA Board of Trustees.

Affiliate School Requirements

To apply as an Affiliate School, schools should:

Offer a curriculum compatible with American/international educational practices

Affiliate Schools may upgrade to full Member School status at any time upon achieving accreditation from a NESA-recognized agency (CIS, MSA, NEASC or WASC).

Access research, tools, and resources to support school improvement, included as part of your membership.

Receive a NAIS School Subscription, including Career Center access, online publications and newsletters, and discounts on events and resources.
Receive a Marshall Memo subscription for your Head of School and Wider Circle Representative.
Participate in the NESA Salary & Benefits Survey and access regional benchmarking data to inform decision-making and track trends over time.

Note: In school groups or systems, one school receives the NAIS subscription; one Wider Circle Representative receives the Marshall Memo.

Representation & Strategic Partnership

Help inform and shape NESA programs and learning priorities.

Apply to serve on the NESA Board of Trustees.
Nominate a candidate to the NESA Professional Development Advisory Committee (PDAC), helping shape the NESA learning program.
Designate a Wider Circle Representative as your school’s liaison with NESA.
Participate in NESA governance by vote at the Annual General Meeting (AGM).
Consult with the NESA Executive Director as Head of School to exchange perspectives and insights.
Serve as a host school for NESA summits and institutes, by invitation.
