As AI reshapes education, how can teachers stay grounded in human values and professional purpose?

AI is becoming increasingly relevant to education systems worldwide, and teachers are being called on to navigate not just new tools, but new responsibilities. This three-part online series explores the UNESCO Framework for AI Competency for Educators, focusing on the knowledge, mindsets, and ethical foundations teachers need to integrate AI in ways that are human-centered, responsible, and meaningful for student learning.

Session 1

UNESCO framework for teachers and students: what it means for the ways schools integrate artificial intelligence.

In this first session, we will be introduced to the UNESCO framework for teachers and students. Rather than focusing solely on what AI can do, this framework centers on what teachers need to know and be able to do to use AI responsibly, ethically, and effectively.

We will review AI foundations and applications including:

  • Basic AI Techniques and Applications: Teachers should acquire foundational knowledge of AI techniques and their applications, enabling them to understand and explain AI concepts effectively.
  • Application Skills: Educators can develop proficiency in applying AI tools within their teaching practices, enhancing the learning experience for students.
  • Creating with AI: Teachers are encouraged to engage in creating educational content or solutions using AI, fostering innovation in their pedagogical approaches.

Session 2

UNESCO teacher’s framework for a Human Centered Mindset.

AI must serve human needs—not the other way around. This competency calls on educators to ensure AI supports student agency, well-being, and social connection, rather than undermining them.

In this session, we will introduce AI tools that can support teachers in developing student agency, well-being and social connections.

Session 3

UNESCO teacher’s framework for Ethical Use of AI.

In this closing session, we will introduce the ethical dilemmas inherent in using AI and explore ways to mitigate energy use, bias, and data security.

OUTCOMES

  • Understand the core components of the UNESCO Framework for AI Competency.
  • Identify foundational AI concepts, tools, and applications relevant to classroom practice.
  • Explore strategies for promoting human-centered use of AI.
  • Recognize common ethical challenges in educational AI use.
  • Reflect on your role in shaping responsible, values-driven AI integration in your school context.

Participants will earn a Certificate of Completion.

AUDIENCE

For all educators – teachers, coaches, curriculum coordinators, and school leaders – who are exploring how to engage with AI in ways that ethically elevate and enhance human-centered student learning.

Whether you're just beginning to understand AI or already experimenting with tools in your practice, this series will help ground your approach in the competencies outlined by UNESCO.
