Program Overview

School-based child protection team members are invited to participate in this foundational workshop, which offers deep training through six essential synchronous modules:

  1. Rights-Based Child Protection
  2. Online Safety
  3. Policies and Procedures
  4. Establishing a Team Approach
  5. ITFCP Managing Allegation Protocol
  6. First Responder Training

Within these modules, we will delve into additional topics including:

  • Definitions and possible indicators of abuse
  • Professional boundaries
  • Creating a school climate of safeguarding
  • The grooming process
  • Child-on-child abuse

Case studies will be employed throughout to support schools in strengthening safeguarding procedures. Resources and support for whole staff training will be provided through the training-of-trainers approach.

Outcomes

  • Understand child protection accreditation standards and foundational beliefs.
  • Determine needed policies and stages of implementation.
  • Identify supporting resources, including ITFCP Allegation Protocol, audits, and CP policy samples.
  • Work as a team to enhance or create CP policies and procedures.
  • Prioritize supplemental policies.
  • Understand basic victim and offender behavior.

Participants will earn an ICMEC Level I Certificate upon completion of the workshop, valid for three years.

Prerequisites

Prior to beginning this Level 1 course, participants will be asked to complete to complete 4 self-paced, asynchronous training modules that make up ICMEC’s “Intro to Safeguarding” asynchronous course. Each module will take roughly 45 minutes to complete. After successfully completing all 4 modules, participants will be issued a Certificate of Completion for the Intro to Safeguarding course. Participants will be asked to share those certificates at the completion of the synchronous course in order to receive the final Level I Certificate.

This training is recommended for all child protection team members, including:

  • Child protection designates and deputies
  • Senior leaders and designated board members
  • Counselors
  • HR professionals
  • Athletic and activity directors
  • Nurse/medical staff
  • Staff with special child protection responsibilities (IT, SEL, trips/service learning) and curriculum areas of vulnerability (early years, special needs/SEN, athletics, music, performing arts)

SCHEDULE

The three one-hour sessions will be held live at the same time on each date:

Tuesdays, 1:00-3:00 PM (Athens, Greece time)

  • November 3, 2026 (GMT+2)
  • November 10, 2026 (GMT+2)
  • November 17, 2026 (GMT+2)

Each session will be followed by an optional 15-minute Q&A.

About the Speaker

Debbie Downes

DEBBIE DOWNES joined the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children as the Director of Global School Initiatives in August 2022. In this role, she develops and provides child protection training, support, and resources to schools around the world. She has been supporting ICMEC’s work as a regional trainer since July 2020. Debbie is also an active member of the International Taskforce on Child Protection (ITFCP) and currently co-chairs the committee on Online Harm and Abuse.

Debbie has worked in international education for 18 years, first as an elementary teacher, then as school principal, and then as Accreditation and Child Protection Lead for an organization of 36 international schools. 

Debbie’s background in child protection includes an MSW from the University of California at Berkeley and several years of experience working in the court unit of Children and Family Services in Contra Costa County, California.
